IUPUI Upward Bound Accepts Donations for Hurricane Harvey Relief

Indianapolis, IN (September 2017) – IUPUI’s Upward Bound program joined the “Hoosiers Helping Houston” initiative, which was started by local community leaders as a means of partnering with the Red Cross to streamline donation efforts for Hurricane Harvey relief. Contributions through Upward Bound were dropped off at the tables by their office, located at Room B07 in the lower level of IUPUI’s Taylor Hall.

Upward Bound accepted donations of water bottles and baby wipes until Saturday, September 8, 2017. Contributors were asked to bring those two types of donation items only, as the Hoosiers Helping Houston committee had a very specific list of donation items to fulfill.

According to Esther Myrick, assistant director of Upward Bound, this was not the first time that the program incorporated giving back into its operations. “We really like to teach our students the importance of giving back. This is all part of the cultural and social exposure we like them to have in order to become well-rounded individuals,” Myrick explained. In the past, Upward Bound made multiple donations to IUPUI’s Paws Pantry and participated in the WRTV-6 toy drive, an event it plans on joining again this year.
