Dr. Julie Hatcher will retire at the end of this calendar year. Julie’s career of thirty years marks an important era for IUPUI’s commitment to the public purposes of higher education. Since her appointment as adjunct lecturer in 1988, she has significantly influenced service learning pedagogy within higher education and has collaborated with many campus colleagues and community partners to embed service-learning, public scholarship, and community engagement into our culture.
Julie currently serves as the executive director of the Center for Service and Learning, working across both curricular and co-curricular programs to develop civic-minded graduates and professionals. She is also an associate professor of philanthropic studies in the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Her many accolades include the Distinguished Career Award (International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement, 2017) and the first recipient of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy Undergraduate Teaching Award (2018). She was the inaugural director of undergraduate programs for the Lilly School of Philanthropy and has heavily influenced teaching and learning through research, faculty consultation, and faculty learning communities.

Dr. Hatcher is co-editor of the IUPUI Series on Service Learning Research, along with Dr. Robert Bringle. Julie is lead editor of the third book in the series, Research on Student Civic Outcomes (Stylus, 2016), as well as the fourth book, Practical Wisdom for Conducting Research (in process). She created the model for the IUPUI Research Academy that annually attracts and supports 30 scholars from across the country in conducting research on community engagement. She also serves on the national advisory board for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement and served as co-chair for the successful Carnegie Reclassification of IUPUI in 2014.
Julie’s retirement will be a loss for IUPUI. However, the roots of her scholarship are situated deeply in our campus, ensuring that the faculty, staff, and students of IUPUI will remain engaged with the community in educationally meaningful, lasting ways that advance the public good. She will also continue her involvement as a Senior Scholar with the IUPUI Research Academy by providing consultation and guidance to continue its evolution and national contribution to the field.
