Center for Transfer and Adult Students officially launched at IUPUI

As of July 1, 2020, transfer and adult students now have one centralized location to receive assistance in navigating through their unique collegiate journey. The new Center for Transfer and Adult Students combines the Degree Completion Office, the Passport Office, and Transfer Student Services into one cohesive center.

The center will offer support from admission through transition into degree programs for the following students:

Intercampus transfer students (permanent and temporary)
Transfer students from two- and four-year institutions outside the IU system, with a focus on students at Ivy Tech Central Indiana
Prospective, new, returning, and adult students who may or may not have previously attended IUPUI
Students in the general studies degree program
IU Online students
Current IUPUI and Ivy Tech Community College students who take classes at their host institution as guest students

Robbie Lopez-Shue, who is serving as the interim executive director of the Center for Transfer and Adult Students and director of the Passport Program, said that the center will take the three offices that already complemented each other and continue to build upon their previous work. For example, the work done in the Passport Office will now be done by the Passport Program within the Center for Transfer and Adult Students.

Lopez-Shue also said that the combined resources of the three offices should allow for the Center for Transfer and Adult Students to create more connections around campus.

“We hope to be able to build stronger partnerships around campus when serving transfer and adult students. . . . we have an opportunity to really connect with the academic units across campus to be able to help them with their transfer and adult students,” Lopez-Shue said.

Julie Landaw, who previously served as the director of the Passport Office and is now working in the Center for Transfer and Adult Students, echoed the benefits of the combined resources from the three offices.

“The three offices already have such a strong foundation across campus and have built some great relationships,” said Landaw, “. . . we all have to work better to facilitate transfer and increase degree completion, and working together with more streamlined resources can enable us to do that.”

The students served by the Center for Transfer and Adult students will still be advised by their respective schools; however, the center will house the advisors for general studies majors through the School of Liberal Arts.

One such advisor is Gabrielle Black, who has worked in the Degree Completion Office since she graduated from IUPUI in 2016 and is transitioning into the Center for Transfer and Adult Students as a student success coach and general studies advisor.

Black, who was a transfer student herself during her time at IUPUI, said that having a place like the Center for Transfer and Adult Students would have been beneficial for her as a student so she could have had a centralized location that was just for her and students like her.

Lopez-Shue and other staff members in the center are looking forward to welcoming students to the center, located in Walker Plaza, Suite 130, this fall.
