About the Principles

A History of the Principles of Learning

For nearly two decades, IUPUI has been nationally recognized for its Principles of Undergraduate Learning (PULs), which also were referenced in a 2013 resolution by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education that named Indiana as a LEAP state. The PULs articulate the student learning outcomes that are common across all undergraduate degree programs at IUPUI and that are introduced in general education, strengthened within majors and ultimately demonstrated in culminating capstone experiences. The PULs were approved by the IUPUI faculty in 1998 and then subsequently revised in 2007; the Division of Students Affairs added the Principles of Co-Curricular Learning in 2013. Executive Vice Chancellor Kathy Johnson charged a task force with reviewing and refreshing the PULs in the 2017–18 academic year.
