Whether noted on the transcript or not, all tracks, concentrations, and specializations require the approval of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee (effective spring 2019).
Creating a new track, concentration, or specialization
Before you begin
The items listed below must be completed before submitting a proposal for a new track, concentration, or specialization:
- The proposal should be accompanied by letters of support from the deans of schools that may be affected by the new track, concentration, or specialization through any potential overlap of the proposed program or proposed new courses. In the case of new Purdue programs, proposals must have letters of support from the appropriate counterpart dean or department chair at West Lafayette.
- Any new courses required for the track, concentration, or specialization should have been approved or be in the course remonstrance process.
- All online and hybrid programs must go through the IU Office of Online Education approval process.
Instructions
The steps listed below for new tracks, concentrations, or specializations must be completed as described. Incomplete proposals will be returned. If you have any questions about the approval process, please contact your Undergraduate Affairs Committee representative.

Step 3
Undergraduate Affairs Committee (UAC)
After the senior associate vice chancellor for academic affairs approves the proposal, the Office of Academic Affairs will forward the proposal to the UAC for review and approval.
Step 4
Presentation to UAC
The chair of the UAC will invite the originating unit to present the proposal at a regularly scheduled UAC meeting.
Step 5
Chief academic officer and trustees
Following approval by the UAC, the proposal will be forwarded by the UAC to the chief academic officer for approval. If approved by the chief academic officer, the proposal will be entered into the APPEAR system by the Office of Academic Affairs and will be forwarded to the Academic Leadership Council (IU degrees) or the associate provost at Purdue West Lafayette (Purdue degrees) to continue in the approval process. Following approval at this stage, the proposal is presented to either the IU or Purdue trustees as an information item.
